Current Debates about Psychotherapy

23/03/2010

"Therapy" by Josh Appignanesi
 Friday 9 April – 3.00 pm

A special reading of a new play about the clash between the values of psychotherapy and those of the HPC will take place on April 9th. 'Therapy' is written by Josh Appignanesi, whose new film 'The Infidel' opens in April, and directed by Matthew Lloyd, whose recent production of 'Duet for One' at the Almeida was highly acclaimed.

It is a hilarious satire, drawing on a detailed knowledge of the current debates while at the same time being accessible to those from outside the psychotherapy field.

Richard Schiff from 'The West Wing' will play the anti-HPC therapist, and the rest of the cast will certainly include some terrific actors (more details later this week)

We would encourage you to reserve your seats as soon as possible. The reading will take place at Vaudeville Theatre, the Strand starting at 3pm, and proceeds will go towards the JR Fighting Fund.

Tickets are £20 and can be reserved by phoning 0845 838 0829. Do invite your friends to come along too!

Tickets can be paid for, and any other donations made, either by direct transfer to: JR Fighting Fund, Lloyds Bank
Sort Code 30-00-04, Account 02101964
or by cheque made payable to the ‘JR Fighting Fund’
to Pine Cottage, Thornden Wood Road, Herne Bay, CT6 7NZ

The Maresfield Report on the Regulation of Psychotherapy in the UK

“This report examines the proposed regulation of counselling and psychotherapy under the Health Professions Council (HPC). In 2007 the Government White Paper on ‘Trust, Assurance and Safety – The Regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century’ gave the HPC the task of assessing the ‘regulatory needs’ of the talking therapies and whether ‘its system is capable of accommodating them’. At that time, nearly all the counselling and psychotherapy organisations in the UK had agreed that HPC was not suited to regulate the talking therapies, and a variety of alternative models were discussed...

...This report details the arguments for and against HPC regulation, and sets out the history and context of the debate, with comparisons to the situation in Europe and internationally”

“The Psychoanalytic Consortium is a network of psychoanalytic groups founded with the aim of keeping the spirit of psychoanalysis alive in a culture which tends to favour quick fix solutions and a simplistic conception of our inner lives.Psychoanalysis sees human beings as complex and contradictory and the task of psychoanalytic therapy is to slowly unravel our histories to see how they have contributed to our present difficulties”
