Answering your questions about psychotherapy

  1. Can I first have a consultation, a finding-out session?

Yes, you can. This can be useful in dealing with further questions you may have, or just finding out if you and the therapist feel able to work together.

  2. How much would I have to pay?

This can be negotiated. It is best if you discuss fees with the therapist, as they are responsible for setting their own fees.

  3. Can I choose a man or woman therapist?

Of course you can. The choice is yours, assuming both male and female psyhotherapists are available in your area,

  4. How long would my therapy go on for? How frequent would the sessions be?

These are questions for you to discuss with your therapist: How many sessions and the frequency of sessions will depend on your personal need, among other things.

  5. Can I apply for the Guild’s Reduced Fee Clinic?

You can apply if you live in the Clinic’s Area of Benefit: Click here for more information

  6. I think I will need a reduced fee, but I am outside the Reduced Fee Clinic’s area. Can I be still be seen for less?

Most Guild therapists keep some places for lower-fee clients. We recommend that you ask the therapist if they have any vacancies when you contact them.

  7. Can I speak to someone about therapy and how to select a psychotherapist?

If you would like to speak to someone for help in selecting a therapist, contact one of our regional referral coordinators - see the list on our Find a therapist page.

  8. Is a therapist marked as “Trainee” able to provide a professional service?

Many of our trainees are qualified counsellors and have been working in the field for many years. All students and trainees are supervised by qualified Guild members.
