APPLICANTS MUST BE TRAINED AS PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPISTS, HAVING COMPLETED A PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY TRAINING THAT IS RECOGNISED BY THE CPJA SECTION OF UKCP OR THE BPC.
Please note that trainings other than psychoanalytic psychotherapy trainings as described above will not equip you to apply for this popular course even if you have had psychoanalytic supervision.
The course is designed to suit the needs of participants with varying degrees of post-qualification clinical and supervisory experience. Applicants will be selected on the basis of their application forms.
Applicants must have one or more groups or individuals in psychoanalytic supervision for the duration of the course. The supervision offered must be psychoanalytic in orientation, though the supervisees themselves need not be psychoanalytic psychotherapists.
THE COURSE FORMAT
Each Saturday there will be two morning lectures or one lecture and a presentation on another topic. In the afternoons there will be a Reading Group studying the psychoanalytic literature on supervision and small Supervision of Supervision Groups. In addition:
- 3 individual tutorials
- 15 hours Individual Supervision of Supervision
- Optional 5,000 word essay

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE:
- 80% attendance at the 7 Saturday seminars 10am - 4.30pm. You are expected to do all the reading for the Reading Seminars and as much general reading as you can.
- 3 individual tutorials with the course director.
- 15 hours Individual Supervision of Supervision or the equivalent in a group with a psychoanalytic psychotherapist who has been qualified at least 5 years. You will need a letter from your supervisor of supervision saying that your supervision is of an acceptable standard. This letter should be sent to the Guild Office before the last seminar of the course.
- Evidence that you can deal with letters, reports, references etc which may be required by supervisees or by their training / professional organisations (including ethics panels). This may involve some written exercises which can form a basis for part of the 5,000 word essay required by BAPPS.
- We may ask you to meet up with/communicate via phone or email with another course member a few times in between seminars for support and discussion of specific issues. You will be able to choose your partner and where you live will be taken into account.
- Optional 5,000 word essay.

BAPPS MEMBERSHIP
(British Association for Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Supervision)
The Guild Supervision Course is on record with BAPPS as fulfilling their requirements for membership although we and other supervision courses cannot automatically give you membership.
Please note that you yourself will need to apply after you have completed the Guild course. You will need to have completed all the Guild course requirements and written the 5,000 word essay required by BAPPS. You will be able to download application forms from the BAPPS website: http://www.supervision.org.uk/
BAPPS is an association of psychodynamic/psychoanalytic supervisors and therefore membership is restricted to –
Persons who are trained in psychotherapy by an organisation recognised by the CPJA Section of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) or by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)
OR
Persons who are trained in psychodynamic counselling to at least Diploma level or equivalent on a training recognised as such by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or by BAPPS, and have undertaken 3 years of individual therapy while on the course
AND
Have undertaken a psychodynamic supervision training of not less than 90 hours contact time, in which supervision of supervision should comprise either 45 hours in a group or 15 hours of one to one supervision of supervision. Have completed a qualifying paper of no less than 5000 words with a separate supervisor’s report stating that their supervision work is of a satisfactory standard
OR
Persons not falling into the above categories who satisfy criteria approved by the management committee of BAPPS:
Where a course has provided theoretical input of not less than 45 hours but did not include supervision of supervision and a satisfactory supervisor’s report can be submitted.
Where courses do not require qualifying written work a paper can be submitted of between 3000 to 5000 words. Details of the requirements for a written paper will be sent on request or by the BAPPS Membership Committee if a written paper is required following the receipt of an application
For people with substantial professional experience for whom aspects of qualification differ from those stated above a portfolio can be submitted demonstrating levels of experience in supervision practice, therapy practice, supervision of practices and previous trainings or apprenticeships.
